Dismissing the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department inquiry into the death of Swami Nigamanand as ordered by the Uttarakhand government, the Congress on Wednesday demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case. "The Ramesh Pokhriyal government is responsible for the death of Swami Nigamanand as it failed not only to check illegal quarrying in the Kumbh area at Haridwar but also failed to provide proper medical care to him," said a BJP leader.

A week after the killing of a 13-year old boy in an Army premises in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department has cracked the case with the arrest of a retired Army officer, who confessed to his involvement in the incident. The special team of the Crime Branch of CID police arrested the 58-year old Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Kandaswamy Ramraj and recovered the 0.3 mm rifle used to fire at Dilshan, who was hit by the bullet.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes on Friday accused policemen of raping and killing the Lakhimpur teenager, even as the Uttar Pradesh government filed a status report before the Allahabad high court on the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department probe into the incident. The commission, which had visited Lakhimpur Kheri recently to inquire into the death of the 14-year-old girl in Nighasan police station, spoke to the parents of the victim.
